The Harbor Sailing Cruise in Newport is offered Saturdays and Sundays May to October and seven days a week in July and August, subject to availability. Weekend Sails are typically offered at 12:30 PM, 3:00 PM and 5:30 PM. Weekday Sails take place at 5:30 PM.

How Long Is The America's Cup Sailing in Newport

The Americas Cup Sailing Trips have a cruise length of approximately 2 hours and a total duration of approximately 2¼ hours. The yacht will be under sail-power for approximately 1½ hours.

Does Weather Impact Sailing Experience Gifts

The Newport Sailing Trips typically run rain or shine but may be rescheduled by the Captain due to severe weather conditions such as high winds, heavy rain, fog or other inclement weather.

Dress comfortably. Flat rubber-soled shoes and layers are recommended for this sailing adventure.

What To Know Before You Go

Sails take place on a 12 Meter Sailing Yacht. All of the Newport 12 Meter Yachts have competed in the America’s Cup, which means that you and your guest will be sailing on a yacht built to Lloyds of London A-1 specifications, the highest standards. All Yachts are U.S. Coast Guard certified and meticulously maintained to reflect their prestigious America’s cup history.

Passengers may bring their own beer, wine and light snacks. Participation in the Two Hour Harbor Sail Cruise Experience is limited to individuals 5 years of age or older.

While motion sickness is possible, it is unlikely and can be reduced by avoiding heavy meal(s) prior to the scheduled sail. All passengers must sign a release form.

All participants must sign a liability waiver prior to boarding the yacht. Participants age 18 or younger must have an adult sign for them and participate in the sail with them.

Restrooms are available on-board.

Gratuity for the Captain & Crew is not included and may be extended following your sail.

The surprising part, for me, was how little work I actually did, I was always assuming everyone would be running around and busy and would be worn out at the end of the experience, quite the contrary, I got to see everything in the bay, talk to the sailors and enjoy a free COLD diet coke. Questions about 12 Meter Sailing Newport

Question: Is there parking available near the ship?

Answer: Unfortunately there is no onsite parking. However, the ship is located within easy walking distance of public parking. Paid parking is located at Sayer’s Wharf/Mooring Restaurant, directly off America’s Cup Avenue in historic downtown Newport. Free parking is available 3 blocks away at the Visitor’s Center.
We recommend arriving early to give yourself plenty of time for parking. You don't want to miss the boat!
Question: What should I bring on the sail?

Answer: We recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, light jacket and of course a camera. You'll have plenty of opportunity to take pictures of beautiful Narragansett Bay throughout this Newport Sailing Adventure! You may also bring a small amount of beer, wine and/or food on board the boat. Hard alcohol is NOT permitted. There is plenty of space to stow purses, small bags and other belongings on the yacht.
Question: I recently received the America's Cup Sailing Experience. I haven't been on a boat before, how should I dress?

Answer: Please keep in mind that the temperatures on Narragansett Bay may be different to that in downtown Newport. Therefore, participants are strongly advised to wear layers. We also recommend bring light sweater, sweatshirt, jacket, or windbreaker. During the Spring and Fall, wearing pants and bringing a warmer jacket or blanket is also advisable. Please wear comfortable flat footwear such as sneakers (without black soles). High-heals are not permitted. Additional recommended items include sunglasses and hats. Keep in mind when selecting your attire that depending on the winds and weather that day, you may be lucky enough to enjoy the ocean water spray while on-board.
Question: Are food and beverages included? My husband and I would like to bring a small bag with lunch.

Answer: No, there is no food or beverage service on-board the sailboat. However, Passengers are welcome to bring non-alcoholic beverages as well as beer, wine and snacks with them. While small coolers are permitted, there is limited space on the deck for such items.
Question: Is there room for me to bring an extra bag on the boat?

Answer: Yes. There is space to store small bags below deck on the yacht. Bags are accessible throughout the sailing trip. Please note, full-size luggage is not permitted.
Question: Do I need to have any previous sailing experience?

Answer: No! Sailing experience is not necessary in order to enjoy the unique thrill of sailing aboard an America's Cup 12 Meter yacht, all are welcome aboard! Throughout the sailing adventure, passengers may actively participate or just sit relax and enjoy the sights. While active participation is welcomed, it is not required.
Question: I just received this lovely gift and would like to know if there is a bathroom on board the ship?

Answer: Yes. There is a nautical restroom on board the boat which passengers may use during the sail.
Question: Do I need to wear a life jacket?

Answer: No. However, life jackets are available for all passengers onboard the boat. While passengers are offered life jackets to wear throughout the sailing trip, they are not required to wear them.
Question: Will I get wet?

Answer: Yes, it is possible! Depending on the wind and weather on the day of the sailing experience, participants may get wet from ocean water spray while onboard the sailboat.
Question: Is the boat handicap accessible?

Answer: Unfortunately wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the sailboat. Individuals who are pregnant, have broken bones or other physical conditions which are considered unsafe conditions are unfortunately not eligible to participate.

Answer: Yes. Children 5 years of age or older may enjoy the sailing experience. Due to safety reasons, children under the age of 5 are not permitted.
